Governor Vacancies
If you’re interested in supporting Berry Hill Primary School, why not become a governor? You don’t need to have any knowledge of the education sector - in fact, we welcome applications from those outside of the sector. What we are looking for is a diversity of perspectives and experiences that can strengthen our governance systems and improve the school for all.
Here’s what one of our governors, Anthony, has to say about his experience of becoming a first-time governor at Berry Hill.
“Both of my children have attended Berry Hill and loved their time there. When I heard about the governor vacancies, I was unsure at first. I completed my teaching degree in 2002 but followed a different career path, so I was unsure what I could contribute.
I soon found that the role of governance requires me to use different skills than I’d expected. It was a chance to contribute to the strategic direction of the school, together with some quality assurance responsibilities. My social care background helped me to take on the role of safeguarding governor, but when I attended ‘safeguarding for governors’ training, I found that this experience wasn’t really necessary - again, the role of safeguarding governor is to have an oversight of the systems and procedures in place.
Training has been a key theme of my time as governor. It’s been a great opportunity to learn and apply new skills, working with a team of others to support the school’s development."
As with any responsible role, there is a time commitment. As well as full governing board (FGB) meetings, there are committee meetings, which focus on a particular aspect of governance, such as the curriculum or health and safety. These committee meetings are not attended by every board member. You will need to be available for a few evenings a term to attend.
We’d love to hear from anybody interested in becoming a governor. Those with business management skills, financial management skills, or a health and safety background will find they especially have much to contribute to (and learn from) a governance role. No qualifications are required, and once your DBS is cleared, you’ll be invited to attend our meetings and settle into a specific role that is relevant to your strengths.
